Pleasant Pine Mountain

The theme of our New Hampshire trip has been “stay below the tree line.”  I’d like to say it’s because I don’t like really steep heights and it’s safer, but the real reason is that above tree-line trails hurt a lot.

So we looked in the glide (the guidebook that lies) and found the Pine Mountain Trail, which you can start from Gorham Village.

We started at the Dolly Copp/Pinkham “B” Road, which is the second Dolly Copp entrance off of Route 16 past Jackson and Pinkham Notch.

The dirt road trail

You start on a dirt road that gently ascends.  We took the Ledge Trail up (on the right, 0.9 miles up).  Those of you who do not like heights know that going up is much easier than coming down because you aren’t looking down.  The beauty of this route is that it is very steep going up, but you can take another path that leads you to the dirt road going down.

Entering the Ledge Trail

The trail is not well marked so when you get to the wide ledge, cut across it completely and pick up the trail again.  The trail then narrows as it climbs up. I had to do a little bit of scrambling with my hands.

Beautiful views

The summit offers beautiful views of Mount Washington and Carter Notch.  There are also several other vantage points, such as Angel View.

We took the Pine Mountain Trail back down, which takes you by the Horton Center.

The entire loop we did was 3.5 miles and it was very enjoyable.
