The
Fat Man and I are back in the White Mountains (it feels like we never left). To avoid another River Ellis incident, I
planned an easy first hike on the Old Bridle Path up West Rattlesnake Mountain.
It is right off Route 113 near Holderness, New Hampshire.
It’s only 2 miles round trip and a gradual ascent with an elevation gain of around 450 feet, which is like puddle jump compared to most of the mountains here.
There are plenty of log steps on the way up, which make the trail very pretty. No need to look for any blazes. It's just one trail that goes straight up.
It only took us about a half hour to scoot up and the view of Squam Lake is spectacular. It is definitely the best view for the least amount of effort in these parts. I can see how it might be challenging for someone who is sedentary (after all, it is all uphill).
Beautiful view of Squam Lake from the summit |
The sun was shining brightly and the weather was cool, which made for a perfect day. We found a rock at the top and sat in the sun for about 20 minutes or so. Others have written that this is good first hike for kids, and I would have to agree.
Overlooking Squam Lake |
It was certainly more crowded than most hikes we do in New Hampshire, but that is to be expected with this kind of hike. The parking lot is self-limiting because you cannot park on Route 113. During the on-season, it is probably a very popular place.

The summit is higher than it looks |
We
met two couples — who are former New Yorkers — and they recommended Walters
for lunch in Holderness (think Walter the fish, from "On Golden Pond"). The view of the water was delightful and I’d
recommend the lobster sliders. Yum.
